IEBC Announces Dates for Kakamega and Mombasa Postponed Elections

After the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared that the election would take place before the end of August, residents of the counties of Kakamega and Mombasa will now have the chance to elect new governors.

During a forum at the Bomas of Kenya on Monday, August 22, the team led by Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the exercise was set to take place on Monday, August 29.

Following a private meeting between Chebukati and the IEBC commissioners, a decision was arrived at.

This is after the exercise, which was scheduled for August 9, failed to take off following errors on ballot papers in both counties.

Kakamega governor candidate Cleophas Malala said they had no problem with the date proposed by the commission.

“We however want to know if there will be enough time and money for civic education. Our voters need to be informed of the date and encouraged to turn up for the exercise,” Malala said.

Mombasa ODM gubernatorial candidate Abdulswamad Nassir had said he will not attend the consultative meeting with IEBC officials.

Nassir was to send his running mate Francis Thoya.

Elections will also take place in six additional arrears where voting had been shelved.

The other affected regions were Kitui Rural Constituency in Kitui County, Kacheliba Constituency in West Pokot County, Pokot South Constituency also in West Pokot County and Rongai Constituency (Nakuru County). All the vacant positions were for the MP positions.
